Foreign Office Issues Travel Alert for UK Tourists in South Korea
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a formal warning for UK tourists visiting South Korea, effective from Wednesday, March 18. This alert follows the addition of critical information regarding a large-scale public event on the FCDO's official 'Warnings and insurance' page, urging travellers to exercise heightened caution.
Details of the Public Event and Crisis Alert
According to the FCDO update, a major public concert is scheduled to take place at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on Saturday, March 21, from 8pm to 9pm. Authorities anticipate large crowds and significant local disruptions throughout the event. In response, the South Korean government has elevated its crisis alert to level 2, labelled 'caution', which will remain in effect from midnight on March 18 until midnight on March 21 in the Jongro-gu and Jung-gu districts of Seoul.
This increased alert level is directly linked to the heightened risks associated with mass gatherings, as confirmed by official statements. The FCDO strongly advises visitors to monitor local media reports closely and adhere strictly to instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety during this period.
Transport and Access Restrictions in Seoul
Substantial transport disruptions are expected in the affected areas. Sejong-daero will be completely closed to vehicular traffic from 9pm on Friday, March 20, until 6am on Sunday, March 22. While pedestrian access will technically remain open, movement may be severely restricted due to intensive crowd control measures and high crowd density.
Additionally, key subway stations—including City Hall, Gwanghwamun, and Gyeongbokgung—will be shut down from 3pm until 10pm on Saturday, March 21. Bus services operating through the vicinity will be either suspended or rerouted from Friday evening through Sunday, further complicating travel plans for tourists and residents alike.
Background on the Security Concerns
The travel warning coincides with reports that the South Korean government has raised its terror alert near the venue for a highly anticipated comeback concert by the K-pop boy band BTS in Seoul. Specifically, the terror alert level in the Jongno-gu and Jung-gu districts has been escalated from the lowest 'attention' tier to 'caution', which represents the second-lowest level in a four-tier national security system.
Essential Travel Advice from the FCDO
The FCDO emphasises that no travel can be guaranteed entirely safe. For those who choose to proceed with their plans, the office recommends thorough research into destinations and securing comprehensive travel insurance. Such insurance should adequately cover all aspects of your itinerary, planned activities, and potential emergency expenses.
Ultimately, the FCDO provides this advisory to help UK tourists make well-informed decisions regarding their travel, balancing enjoyment with necessary precautions during periods of increased risk.
