Foreign Office Issues Travel Alert for UK Tourists Visiting Spain, France and Italy
The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a significant travel alert to British passport holders planning trips to Spain, France, Italy and twenty-six other countries. This warning follows new regulations that have come into force in the wake of Brexit, as reported by MirrorOnline.
New EU Border Checks for British Travellers
In a recent post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the FCDO stated: 'Travelling to the Schengen area with a UK passport? The EU has introduced new border checks.' The statement added: 'You may need to create a digital record when you arrive - this can include giving fingerprints or having your photo taken.'
The Schengen zone comprises twenty-nine countries, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Clarification for Travel to Greece
However, in an earlier update posted on Monday, the FCDO clarified that Greek authorities have indicated they will not collect fingerprints or photos for UK travellers as part of the EU's new border checks. Those jetting off to Greece are urged to follow advice from authorities on the ground, with the FCDO noting: 'Residents should show their residence documents at passport control.'
Understanding the Entry/Exit System (EES)
The European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new digital border system that has altered the requirements for British travellers heading to the Schengen area. There is no need to take any action prior to arriving at the border, and EES registration is completely free of charge. It is important to note that EES does not apply when travelling to the Republic of Ireland or Cyprus.
This alert serves as a crucial reminder for all UK tourists to stay informed about the latest travel regulations and ensure they are prepared for any new procedures at EU borders. The FCDO continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
