Wetherspoon has opened a new pub at the University of Birmingham, marking a fresh partnership with the university's Guild of Students. The venue, named Joe's, is situated on the campus and serves as the official students' union bar at the Guild of Students, while also welcoming members of the public.
A Nod to Campus Heritage
The name Joe's is inspired by the iconic Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, affectionately known as Old Joe, which stands at the heart of the Edgbaston campus. Completed in the early 20th century, it holds the title of the tallest free-standing clock tower in the world.
Refurbishment and Expansion
The former student union bar has undergone a complete refurbishment and expansion, merging with the adjoining Mermaid bar to create a single, larger pub. The renovation includes a new bar and drinks dispense system to accommodate an expanded range, as well as a new kitchen with gantry, enabling the pub to offer the full Wetherspoon menu. Additional upgrades feature new carpet, lighting, artwork, and fixtures and fittings.
Partnership Details
Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating: "We are delighted to have entered into the partnership with the Guild of Students and look forward to working with it to make Joe's a great success." Emeline Brown, Guild of Students activities and employability officer, highlighted the benefits for students: "This exciting new partnership with J D Wetherspoon offers students greater access to affordable food and drink, alongside increased employment opportunities. We also look forward to welcoming members of the public, helping to create an even more vibrant and lively atmosphere within the Guild of Students."
Management and Staffing
Joe's will continue to be run and managed by the Guild of Students, but the partnership grants the Guild access to Wetherspoon's established business model. Staff will remain employed and managed by the Guild.
Opening Hours and Food Service
The pub is open from 8am to midnight Sunday to Tuesday and Thursday, 8am to 10pm on Wednesdays, and 8am to 1am on Friday and Saturday. Food is served daily from 8am to 11pm, except on Wednesdays when food service ends at 9.30pm.
