Wetherspoons Announces Major European Expansion with New Spanish Airport Pubs
Pub chain Wetherspoons has revealed ambitious plans to open two new establishments in Spain, marking a significant step in its European growth strategy. This move comes shortly after the successful launch of its first Spanish pub at Alicante Airport in February.
Barcelona Airport Set for Dual Wetherspoons Locations
The company will open two pubs at Barcelona-El Prat Airport, capitalizing on the positive reception of its Alicante venture. The first location is scheduled to open at Terminal 1 by September 2026, with a second following at Terminal 2 by January 2027.
Both pubs will operate from 5am to 11pm daily and have a combined capacity to serve nearly 600 passengers. While specific names and additional details remain unconfirmed, the expansion underscores Wetherspoons' commitment to the Spanish market.
Confidence from Leadership and Future European Ambitions
Wetherspoons chairman Tim Martin expressed enthusiasm about the new sites, stating, "We are delighted to have secured two fantastic sites at Barcelona airport. In the short time since opening, our pub at Alicante airport has proven popular with travellers, and we are confident we can replicate that success at our two new pubs in Barcelona."
Martin further indicated that the company aims to open more pubs across mainland Europe in the coming years, with a particular focus on airport locations. This strategy aligns with growing travel demand and the chain's proven model in transit hubs.
Building on Recent Success and Market Trends
The expansion follows the February opening at Alicante Airport's departures area, which has quickly become a favorite among travelers. Wetherspoons' move into Spain reflects broader trends in the hospitality and tourism sectors, as businesses seek to tap into high-traffic areas like airports.
With these developments, Wetherspoons continues to strengthen its presence in Europe, offering familiar pub experiences to international passengers while exploring new growth opportunities in key travel destinations.
