Former Ikea CEO named JD Sports chair

JD Sports Fashion plc has appointed Peter Agnefjäll, the former President and CEO of Ikea Group, as its new chair of the board. Agnefjäll will take up the role on September 1, succeeding Darren Shapland, who has served as interim chair since July 21.

Leadership transition at JD Sports

Agnefjäll brings a wealth of international retail experience to the Greater Manchester-based sportswear giant. He spent nearly two decades at Ikea Group, including a four-year tenure as President and CEO from 2013 to 2017, during which he oversaw significant growth and digital transformation. More recently, he served as chair of Ahold Delhaize from 2021 to 2025 and holds a non-executive director position at WPP. His previous non-executive roles include stints at Deichmann and Wizz Air.

The appointment follows a thorough search process led by senior independent director Kath Smith and the JD Sports board, with support from an external executive search firm. Shapland will remain on the board as an independent director, ensuring continuity during the transition.

Board and leadership reactions

Darren Shapland expressed confidence in the appointment, stating: “On behalf of the board I am delighted to welcome Peter as chair. He brings an exceptional combination of international retail leadership, board experience and a proven track record of overseeing growth and transformation in complex global businesses. His experience and perspective will be invaluable to JD’s board and executive team as the group continues to execute against its strategic objectives and capitalise on the significant opportunities ahead.”

Peter Agnefjäll, chair elect, said: “JD has built a powerful global position in sports and sport-inspired fashion, with a unique connection to its core customer, strong brand partnerships, carefully curated and vibrant stores, and a clear, defined omni-channel strategy. I am excited to be joining the group and look forward to working with the board and leadership team to leverage JD’s strengths, deepening its roots in international markets and affirming its position in a rapidly evolving retail landscape.”

Impact on JD Sports' strategic direction

Agnefjäll's appointment signals JD Sports' continued focus on international expansion and digital innovation. His experience at Ikea, where he led a major digital push, aligns with JD's omni-channel ambitions. The company has been investing heavily in its online presence and store experiences, aiming to strengthen its position in key markets worldwide.

Industry analysts view Agnefjäll's arrival as a positive step for JD Sports, given his track record in transforming global retail operations. His leadership at Ahold Delhaize, one of the world's largest food retail groups, also brings valuable insights into managing complex, multinational businesses.

JD Sports, headquartered in Bury, Greater Manchester, operates over 3,400 stores globally and has seen robust growth in recent years, despite challenges in the retail sector. The appointment of Agnefjäll is expected to provide strategic stability and fresh perspective as the company navigates post-pandemic consumer trends and evolving fashion dynamics.
