North East Ship Repair Specialist UK Docks Lands Historic Bangladesh Navy Contract

In a landmark achievement for the maritime sector, North East ship repairer UK Docks Marine Services has secured a major multimillion-pound contract with the Bangladesh Navy. This represents the company's first-ever project for a foreign naval force, marking one of the most significant moments in its 30-year history.

A Prestigious International Agreement

The South Shields-based firm, which recently announced £84 million of work with the UK Ministry of Defence, will now take receipt of the former HMS Enterprise. This vessel has been decommissioned from the Royal Navy and acquired by the Bangladesh Navy. UK Docks' senior management team flew to Dhaka to sign the Former HMS Enterprise Regeneration Contract alongside the two most senior officers in the Bangladesh Navy.

Jonathan Wilson, Managing Director of UK Docks, stated: "It was a landmark moment for the company when it earned service and maintenance contracts with the Royal Navy more than a decade ago, but this is the first time we've worked on a vessel for a navy beyond the UK."

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The contract is expected to create approximately 23 new jobs, including positions at the company's Tyneside headquarters. These roles will encompass:

  • Programme oversight staff who will collaborate with suppliers in Norway.
  • 20 fixed-term contracts for specialists from the ship repair and maritime engineering sectors.

Initial work on the 90.5-meter long, 3,740-tonne vessel will be conducted at UK Docks' Teesside facility, which has recently expanded from two to four dry docks. Workers will spend the remainder of the year restoring the ship to full operational readiness.

Technological Enhancements and Historical Significance

The regeneration project will involve retrofitting advanced propulsion systems from Norwegian manufacturer Brunvoll AS, improving the vessel's manoeuvrability and reliability. Additionally, UK Docks will install cutting-edge hydrographic and maritime technologies to enhance its data-gathering capabilities.

Mr. Wilson emphasized the project's importance: "The fact that this is a capital project for the newly-formed Bangladesh Government and that it was signed by the equivalent of the first and second Sea Lords of the British Admiralty shows its significance. Without doubt, it's one of the biggest moments in UK Docks' history."

Once completed, the upgraded HMS Enterprise will significantly boost the Bangladesh Navy's capabilities. UK Docks has a prior relationship with the vessel, having previously maintained it along with HMS Echo and HMS Protector.

Vessel Background and Future Prospects

Launched in 2002 and commissioned by the Royal Navy in 2003, HMS Enterprise was renowned for its distinguished service in survey operations, humanitarian support, and disaster-response missions worldwide. It was decommissioned in March 2023 and sold to the Bangladesh Navy last month.

This contract not only underscores UK Docks' growing reputation in the global maritime industry but also opens new possibilities for future international projects, solidifying the North East's position as a hub for ship repair and engineering excellence.
