At least one man suffered serious injuries after an incident at a Birmingham city centre nightclub, with police applying for a summary review of the premises licence.
Incident details
The incident took place at Glamorous, formerly known as Glamorous Show Bar, on Hurst Street in the city's Gay Village in the early morning of Sunday, August 16. Police were called to the venue, which describes itself as an LGBTQIA+ nightclub, shortly after 5am.
According to West Midlands Police, the incident involved 'serious disorder' starting at 5.23am. At least two people are said to have suffered grievous bodily harm, another suffered actual bodily harm, and another was racially abused by two individuals.
Those two individuals were ejected by door staff, who were then assaulted. Further trouble took place outside, with people attacked and one man knocked unconscious.
Police response and licence review
Superintendent Karl Thomas said: “At approximately 05:23 hours, an incident occurred whereby as a result of a person who had racially abused two persons within the venue being ejected from the premises by door staff two members of door staff were assaulted.
“Outside disorder took place and further persons were assaulted including one male being knocked unconscious.
“Staff from the premises did not intervene in the incident outside which involved persons from the premises and did not administer any first aid to the unconscious person.”
The venue was licensed to be open until 6am. A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed: “We were called to reports of an assault on Hurst Street at 5.25am on Sunday, one ambulance attended the scene.
“We treated one patient, a man, for serious injuries before he was taken to hospital for further treatment.”
Licence holder and hearing
Police confirmed the premises licence holder is Matthew Eason, a Reform UK councillor on Walsall Council representing the Beechdale, Leamore & Reedswood ward. The designated premises supervisor is listed as Pauline Winwood.
Supt Thomas applied to Birmingham’s licensing committee for a summary review of the premises licence. He said: “Given the seriousness of the trigger incident on Sunday 16th August, 2026 in my opinion immediate steps are required that can best be achieved through the summary review procedures.
“West Midlands Police have serious concerns for the promotion of the licensing objectives at this premises.
“This is such a serious incident that West Midlands Police would request that the premises license is suspended and the Designated Premises Supervisor is removed.”
The summary review application was heard before the council's licensing sub-committee A at midday on Thursday, August 20. The hearing went into private session due to the criminal investigation, and the decision was not given in public session and remains unconfirmed.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police added: “We are investigating after a disorder in Birmingham this weekend.
“In the early hours of 16 August, we were called to Hurst Street following a fight between a group of men.
“Officers attended and a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with a head injury, though this is not thought to be life-threatening.
“Enquiries are ongoing and we are working to identify possible suspects and witnesses.
“Anyone with more information can call 101 quoting crime number 20/364734/26.”
