Leeds Building Society has sparked widespread anger by informing customers that they will no longer be able to view their mortgage balances or transactions online from July 9, 2026. The move has been described as "frustrating" and a step back to the 1990s by affected borrowers.
Customers Blocked from Online Mortgage Access
In an email sent to customers this week, the society stated: "We’re getting in touch to let you know that from 9 July 2026 you’ll no longer be able to view your mortgage balance or transactions online. We’re sorry if this causes you any inconvenience." The change has left many mortgage holders furious, with some taking to LinkedIn and other social media platforms to express their displeasure.
One customer wrote: "Have I just been teleported back to 1995? Leeds Building Society who on earth thought that this would be a good idea to sign off requirements resulting in customers being unable to see their accounts online and frame it as an upgrade? Shall I take a morning off to pop by a branch to get the latest figure, or perhaps join a call queue to check daily what my balance is?"
Another customer added: "I noticed this email for my mortgage too! Quite frustrating."
Society Apologizes and Offers Alternatives
A Leeds Building Society spokesperson said: "We’re really sorry for the frustration this has caused. As part of a wider system upgrade there will be a period of time when mortgage balances and payments can’t be viewed online. Members can still call us to check their mortgage details, and we’ll continue to send annual statements. We understand members will want to know when the service will return and while we can’t confirm anything at this point, we’ll share updates with them as soon as possible."
The change comes just a month after Leeds announced the permanent appointment of Annette Barnes, previously Interim CEO, as the Society’s Chief Executive Officer. Her appointment followed a comprehensive recruitment process, and she becomes the first permanent female CEO in the society's 151-year history.
