Santander, which operates branches across Birmingham, has begun contacting customers with a £100 cashback incentive on life insurance policies, timed to coincide with the back-to-school season. The offer is designed to encourage parents to consider financial protection as they prepare for the new school term in September.
In emails sent to customers, the bank highlights the practical pressures of the season: "Uniform, school shoes, lunchboxes. There's a lot to tick off the 'back to school' to-do list. But there's something important some parents forget." The message continues: "If something happened to you, would your family be financially protected? Life insurance can help protect your children and give you peace of mind for the future."
How the £100 Cashback Works
The offer applies to new life insurance policies taken out through Santander. Customers who are not in the preferred categories will receive £100 cashback. However, those who hold a Santander mortgage, are a Select customer, or have a current account from the Santander Edge range will receive a higher £150 cashback instead.
Santander states: "We'll pay cashback once per customer. For qualifying joint life protection policies we’ll pay it to the first named policyholder. This offer can be withdrawn at any time." Cashback is paid 280 days after the policy has been taken out, provided the policy has not been cancelled during that period.
Cover Provided by Aviva
The life insurance policies are underwritten by Aviva, described by Santander as the UK's largest insurer. The bank promises "quick and simple cover" with an online quote available in minutes, and highlights the "peace of mind" that comes from having a policy in place.
Santander explains the purpose of life insurance: "Life insurance helps give your family financial protection if you die or suffer from a critical illness while you have your policy. With a policy, you can leave behind a lump sum to help those you love maintain their living standards and keep paying the bills."
Policy Options and Eligibility
Customers can choose between a single policy (covering one person) or a joint policy (covering two people). The policy pays out only once, meaning that after Aviva has settled a claim, the policy ends.
In most cases, life insurance is available even if the applicant has medical conditions. Applicants are required to disclose these conditions when asked, and may need to undergo a medical examination, the cost of which Santander will cover.
Pricing and Considerations
The premium for a policy depends on the level of cover selected and the applicant's personal circumstances, including age, health, and lifestyle. Santander advises customers to review their options carefully to ensure the cover meets their family's needs.
This offer comes as many families face increased financial pressures with the return to school, and Santander is positioning the cashback as a practical way to address both budgeting and long-term security.
