AG Barr, the Scottish drinks giant behind Irn-Bru, has confirmed that the Northumberland-based Fentimans headquarters in Hexham will close this summer, severing the brand's long-standing connection with the region. The decision comes after AG Barr acquired Fentimans earlier this year in a £38m deal.
Closure Details
In a statement, an AG Barr spokesperson said: "Following a thorough consultation process, we have taken the difficult decision to close our Hexham office, with a phased wind-down taking place over the summer. This was not a decision taken lightly, but one that will ensure the long-term integration and continued growth and success of the Fentimans brand within the AG Barr Group." The company emphasised its commitment to supporting affected employees, offering internal opportunities, outplacement services, and enhanced redundancy packages. Many staff have already secured new roles.
Background of the Acquisition
Fentimans, founded in Yorkshire in 1905 and revived in the 1990s by Eldon Robson, had been based in Hexham since the early 1990s. Its headquarters moved to an industrial estate on the town's outskirts in 2015. The company, known for brands like Rose Lemonade and Curiosity Cola, generates around £40m in annual turnover, with significant export sales. AG Barr, with a £420m turnover, added Fentimans to its portfolio in February, alongside Rubicon, Bundaberg, Rio, and Tizer. The acquisition followed the purchase of Frobishers, with both deals totalling £50m. AG Barr CEO Euan Sutherland described the acquisitions as aligned with the company's strategy of enhancing organic growth through mergers and acquisitions.
