Bellway Celebrates 80 Years: From Family Firm to Top 5 Builder

Bellway, one of the North East's largest and most prominent companies, is celebrating its 80th anniversary. The housebuilder, which has its headquarters on the edge of Newcastle but operates nationwide, has grown from a small family business into the UK's fifth largest housebuilder by volume, constructing more than 10,000 homes in the past year alone.

From Humble Beginnings in 1946

Founded in 1946 by John Thomas Bell and his sons, John and Russell, Bellway started as a family firm with deep roots in the region. Over the decades, it has played a pivotal role in shaping communities, including its significant involvement in building homes at Cramlington new town during the 1960s. The company expanded beyond its original North East base to establish a national presence, reflecting its ambitious growth trajectory.

Last year, Bellway reported a turnover of nearly £2.8 billion and was named Large Housebuilder of the Year at The Housebuilder Awards, cementing its reputation for quality and innovation in the industry.

Refreshed Brand and Anniversary Appeal

To mark this milestone, Bellway has unveiled a refreshed brand and launched an appeal to homeowners across the North East who have lived in Bellway-built homes over the past eight decades. The company is inviting residents to share photographs and memories to help chronicle how home designs have evolved since 1946. These contributions will be compiled into a commemorative video celebrating the anniversary.

Chief executive Jason Honeyman highlighted the significance of the milestone: “80 years is a significant milestone in housebuilding. The industry has changed beyond recognition over the decades, and Bellway is committed to leading the way in innovation. We have invested in future-ready homes, including through innovative projects exploring low-carbon technologies at Energy House 2.0 at The University of Salford and Bellway’s Future Hub on-site training facility near Bolton. More recently we opened Home Space, our timber frame factory in Sutton in Ashfield, to support our commitment to build low-carbon homes, while our biodiversity policy exceeds Government requirements. We are proud that Bellway has remained true to its family-focused values, building connected communities while evolving our home designs to ensure our developments leave a positive legacy for people and the planet.”

Rollout of New Branding

Bellway is rolling out its new branding across digital channels, with the updated identity set to appear soon at developments in the North East, including DH1 in Durham, Monument Meadows in Pelton, County Durham, Hartford Edge in Cramlington, and Baydale Village in Darlington.

Marketing director Nicola Hughes explained the customer-centric approach: “Everything we’ve done in evolving the Bellway brand starts with our customers. We want to make the journey simpler, more intuitive and more enjoyable at every stage – from the first online search to the moment they step through the door of their new home.”

Share Your Memories

Homeowners who wish to share their photographs or memories of their Bellway home over the past 80 years in the North East are encouraged to email bellway.communications@bellway.co.uk. The collected pictures will be used to create a video celebrating the company’s anniversary, offering a unique glimpse into the evolution of home design and community building.
