Council Continues Asset Disposal with Nursery Sale
Birmingham City Council is set to sell a former community day nursery at auction just before Christmas as part of its ongoing efforts to manage finances. The former Birchfield Community Day Nursery, located at 1 Haughton Road in Handsworth, will go under the hammer with a guide price starting from £300,000.
Property Details and Auction Information
The sale is being handled by auctioneers Bond Wolfe, with the property scheduled for their auction on Wednesday, December 10. The auction will commence at 8.30am and will be livestreamed, allowing for remote bidding via proxy, telephone, or internet.
The building itself has significant history, having been officially opened by the then-Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Alderman Stanley Bleyer, on August 6, 1970. This means the property is approximately 55 years old.
The facility boasts a range of features that could be attractive to potential buyers, despite requiring refurbishment. The internal layout includes:
- A reception entrance and office
- Four nursery playrooms
- Two kitchens and a staffroom
- Seven stores and a laundry room
- Three staff toilets, two children's toilets, and disabled facilities
- A health room and plant room
The property also benefits from fire doors, double glazing, and external amenities including a courtyard, gated off-road parking, and a children's playground.
Location and Redevelopment Potential
Gurpreet Bassi, chief executive of Bond Wolfe, highlighted the property's prime location, noting it stands back from the road behind a courtyard with gated parking. The freehold site covers approximately 17,513 square feet and is situated just off the A34 Birchfield Road, one of the busiest arterial routes connecting the suburbs of Birchfield and Handsworth Wood to Birmingham city centre.
Bassi commented on the property's condition and potential, stating: "The current building has a range of rooms and facilities, although it needs refurbishment and careful planning as to any future use."
The former nursery will be among numerous lots appearing in Bond Wolfe's December auction. Interested parties can find more details and register to bid through the Bond Wolfe website, by emailing auctions@bondwolfe.com, or by calling 0121 312 1212 or 01902 928 510.
