Robert De Niro Breaks Ground on Manchester's Tallest Skyscraper
De Niro launches Manchester's Nobu skyscraper

Hollywood icon Robert De Niro brought a touch of cinematic glamour to Manchester as he personally launched construction on what will become the city's tallest skyscraper. The acting legend joined business partners at a groundbreaking ceremony for the highly anticipated Nobu Tower, marking a significant moment for Manchester's evolving skyline.

A Star-Studded Groundbreaking

The event drew approximately 200 guests to the dramatic brick-arched railway vaults off Albion Street, where they braved the cold to witness this landmark moment for the city's development. Mr De Niro, founder of the Nobu brand alongside Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Meir Teper, took to the stage with his partners alongside British Nobu Hospitality CEO Trevor Horwell and Salboy's Salford-born managing director Simon Ismail.

The 82-year-old Oscar winner, who kept warm with a pot of tea throughout the proceedings, admitted he was still getting to know Manchester but had already been struck by the city's "real character and creative passion". Looking ahead to the project's six-year timeline, he smiled: "I look forward to coming back when it's finished, if not before. I plan to be around... I think it will take six years so I will make sure I am around."

The Viadux Vision Takes Shape

The Nobu Tower represents the next phase of Salboy's Viadux development, following the successful completion of phase one which transformed historic railway vaults into premium leisure spaces. This new tower will follow a similar concept but stand significantly taller, becoming the highest structure in Manchester city centre upon completion.

Manchester Council Leader Bev Craig welcomed the substantial investment, telling attendees that Manchester was a "city that's going places". The development will feature:

  • A flagship Nobu restaurant within the restored railway vaults
  • A luxury Nobu hotel
  • High-end residential apartments

Celebrated architect Ian Simpson, described by many as the godfather of Manchester's modern skyline, designed the tower and attended the ceremony.

Global Brand Meets Northern Powerhouse

Chef Nobu Matsuhisa expressed his enthusiasm for bringing the brand to Northern England, stating: "It's a city with a great spirit and great energy. This project is about more than a hotel or the residences, it's about community and lifestyle. We are proud to be here and part of it. Viva Manchester!"

During a press conference following the speeches, Mr De Niro demonstrated his continued commitment to the global expansion of the Nobu brand. When asked if the team remained excited about opening new venues worldwide, he responded with a bemused but definite "Of course!"

Co-founder Meir Teper added: "Yes we are very motivated and excited to do new projects. That's what keeps us going. So Manchester is one of them for sure." Chef Nobu acknowledged the challenges of new ventures but praised his team's dedication, concluding: "Now we need to try our best."

The ceremony featured the symbolic turning of soil from a long thin box of earth, with multiple guests including Council Leader Bev Craig and Robert De Niro taking turns with a spade. The event concluded with networking opportunities as attendees discussed this transformative six-year project that promises to reshape Manchester's city centre and culinary landscape.
