Drivers are being warned that this week's 40C heatwave could push older cars beyond the point of economical repair, with bills potentially reaching £6,000, according to new data and expert analysis from Scrap Car Comparison.
Ageing UK Car Fleet at Risk
The warning comes as the average age of a UK car has now reached 10 years, the latest DVLA figures show. More motorists than ever are holding onto ageing vehicles due to rising motoring costs, making them vulnerable to heat-related failures.
Matt Clamp, end-of-life vehicle specialist at Scrap Car Comparison, said older Vauxhalls are among the most commonly scrapped makes during summer, with head gasket failures often leaving owners facing repair bills worth more than the car itself.
Common Heatwave Repair Costs
- Cooling system / overheating - Up to £600
- Head gasket failure - £1,500 to £3,000
- Air conditioning compressor - Up to £2,000
- Engine damage (oil-related) - £2,000 to £6,000
- 12V battery failure - £90 to £250
Expert Insight on Summer Scrappage
“We see the same pattern every summer without exception: an influx of older cars coming to us for scrap after a few intense days of heat,” said Clamp. “Usually it's anything over ten years old, or brands with known weaknesses. Vauxhalls are a prime example: the older models have always been prone to head gasket problems, and a heatwave is often what finally tips them over the edge over the summer months.”
“When a head gasket goes, you're looking at overheating, oil leaks, and serious (and expensive) engine damage. On average, a repair bill for this type of issue can often exceed £1,000, sometimes on a car that's often worth less than the repair itself.”
Heat Exposes Existing Faults
Clamp added: “The heat can do real damage to any car, but older vehicles struggle significantly more. What people don't realise is that the heat rarely creates the problem, unfortunately it exposes it. These faults have usually been developing for months, and not picked up if the car hasn’t been regularly serviced or maintained. The heatwave just makes them impossible to ignore, and drivers are faced with a decision: face a costly repair bill or scrap the car.”
