Lloyds Banking Group has announced the closure of 95 branches across the UK, including five in the West Midlands, as part of its ongoing transition to digital banking. The closures, affecting Lloyds Bank and Halifax branches, will begin in June 2026 and continue into the first half of 2027.
West Midlands Branches Affected
In the West Midlands, the following branches are scheduled to close: Handsworth (Lloyds, June 23, 2026), Harborne (Lloyds, October 8, 2026), Willenhall (Lloyds, November 5, 2026), Kings Heath (Halifax, October 26, 2026), and Wednesbury (Lloyds, March 16, 2027). These closures are part of a broader trend as the group reports that most customers now use mobile apps, websites, or phone banking instead of visiting physical branches.
Nationwide Closure Schedule
Lloyds Bank will close 44 branches in 2026 and 13 more in the first half of 2027. Halifax will shut 51 branches in 2026 and six in 2027. Notable closures include major locations such as Whitechapel, Harrow, Chelmsford, and Carlisle for Lloyds, and Croydon, Torquay, Guildford, and Wimbledon for Halifax.
The group stated that the closures reflect changing customer behavior, with a significant shift towards online banking. According to Lloyds Banking Group, the decision is driven by the fact that the vast majority of transactions are now conducted digitally.
Impact on Communities
The closures have raised concerns about access to cash and banking services, particularly in areas with older populations or limited digital access. However, the group has emphasized that it will continue to provide services through alternative channels such as the Post Office and mobile banking vans where needed.
The full list of closures is available on the Lloyds Banking Group website, with specific dates for each branch. Customers are advised to check for alternative banking options in their area.
