Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has conceded that a return for Ibrahim Osman is looking increasingly unlikely, as the Ghanaian winger continues to impress at Brighton & Hove Albion during pre-season. The 21-year-old, who starred on loan at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park in the second half of last season, has been in outstanding form for the Seagulls, most recently scoring in a 4-3 friendly victory over Strasbourg.
Blues had hoped to bring Osman back for a second loan spell, but BirminghamLive reported last month that the two clubs were poles apart in their valuations. With Osman now pushing for a place in Brighton's starting line-up, Davies has told BBC Radio WM that the move is "not something that I'm feeling is too likely."
Davies praises Osman's impact
Speaking to BBC Radio WM, Davies expressed his admiration for the player while acknowledging the reality of the situation. "I'm a big fan of the player. I thought he did so well for us with his speed and power and his attitude, but he's gone back there and what I can pick up is that they've liked the look of him," he said.
Osman's performances have not gone unnoticed at Brighton, who have the added incentive of Europa Conference League football this season. "They've got the Conference League this season as well, so whether he eventually leaves is looking doubtful," Davies added.
Blues to target alternative wingers
With Osman's return now in doubt, Davies has urged his recruitment team to identify alternative left-wingers to bolster the squad ahead of the new campaign. "Obviously we wish him the very best, but we'll have to make sure that we have lots of targets in the next few weeks that we can bring in to boost us in that area," he said.
Osman is expected to feature in Brighton's next friendly against Roma, and as things stand, he could still be a Brighton player when they begin their Premier League campaign against Aston Villa on August 23. For Birmingham City, the focus now shifts to finding a suitable replacement to add depth and quality to their attacking options.
