Popular Baby Names in Birmingham Area Revealed

New data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed the most popular baby names across Birmingham, Staffordshire, and the Black Country for 2022. The analysis, based on birth registrations, shows clear regional favorites with Amelia and Muhammad dominating many local authority areas.

Birmingham’s Top Names

In Birmingham, Muhammad remained the most popular boys' name for the fourth consecutive year, with 382 registrations. For girls, Amelia took the top spot with 112 births, followed by Olivia (104) and Lily (97). The data highlights a strong preference for traditional names, with Oliver, Noah, and George also featuring prominently for boys.

Across Staffordshire, the most popular boys' name was George, with 51 registrations, while Amelia was the top girls' name with 44. In Lichfield, Oliver and Isla were the most chosen names, while in Cannock Chase, Noah and Olivia led. The data shows regional variations even within the county.

Black Country Trends

In the Black Country, Wolverhampton saw Muhammad as the top boys' name (95 registrations), and Amelia for girls (49). In Dudley, Noah and Olivia were most popular, while in Sandwell, Muhammad and Amelia topped the lists. Walsall also favored Muhammad for boys and Amelia for girls.

National Context

Nationally, Noah and Olivia remained the most popular names in England and Wales, according to the ONS. However, regional differences persist, with names like Muhammad showing strong popularity in areas with larger Muslim populations. The ONS report also noted a rise in names inspired by nature and popular culture, such as Luna and Milo.

Impact on Naming Trends

According to the ONS, the data reflects broader societal trends, including the influence of celebrities and cultural shifts. For instance, the name Lilibet, inspired by the Queen's childhood nickname, saw a surge after the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's daughter. However, such trends have not yet significantly impacted the top 10 in the West Midlands region.

The full dataset, which includes names with at least three registrations, is available on the ONS website. Parents can also explore interactive maps to see how their chosen name compares across different areas.
