Morgan Rogers transfer benchmark set by £120m rejection but worst-case scenario must be avoided
Rogers transfer benchmark set by £120m rejection

Whatever Manchester City end up paying for Elliot Anderson should help Aston Villa value Morgan Rogers this summer. Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich are all keen on Rogers, who has five years remaining on his Villa contract. At 23, he is one of the most valuable players in the Premier League.

Rogers' journey to Villa

Rogers joined Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024 for an initial £8 million, rising to £15 million with add-ons. The Championship club retained a 20 per cent sell-on clause, meaning Villa would owe Middlesbrough tens of millions if they sell their prized asset.

Financial constraints and valuation

Villa do not want to sell Rogers, but given Squad Cost Rules (SCR), he could leave if his valuation is met. That figure will likely be influenced by the deal that could see Anderson move from the City Ground to the Etihad. On Wednesday, Nottingham Forest rejected a British-record £120 million bid from City for Anderson, though negotiations continue. The proposed package included an initial £106 million, with £14 million in add-ons.

Anderson appears set to secure a place in England's starting XI this summer, while Rogers faces competition from Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham for the number 10 role. However, after a stellar couple of seasons at Villa—registering 52 goal involvements in 109 appearances—Rogers' stock is high and could rise further.

Worst-case scenario

For Villa, the challenge is that while his value may increase with strong performances for England at the World Cup, a transfer saga in the final month of the window would represent a worst-case scenario. Rogers will not agitate for a move, and while his camp may feel this is the right time to step up to a title contender, Villa will be keen to avoid prolonged uncertainty. They will not settle for less than his true worth. Anderson's potential fee provides a useful benchmark, and any club hoping to prise Rogers away will need to pay a substantial sum.
