Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of left-back Matteo Ruggeri, with the player reportedly giving the move the green light. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Villa will pay €20m for the 24-year-old, who is now expected to enter contract talks with the Premier League club.
Ruggeri identified as Digne replacement
The Italian defender has been targeted as a direct replacement for Lucas Digne, who is set to join Paris Saint-Germain. Ruggeri only joined Atletico from Atalanta last summer, but after struggling to replicate his best form, the Spanish club made him available for transfer.
Villa had also considered AC Milan's Pervis Estupiñán, a move that would have reunited the Ecuador international with Unai Emery following their successful spell together at Villarreal. However, Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim opted to take a closer look at Estupiñán during pre-season, which allowed Villa to focus their efforts on securing Ruggeri.
Impressive appearances despite struggles
Despite falling out of favour at Atletico, Ruggeri still made 47 appearances for the club last season. He started 20 La Liga matches and featured in 13 of the club's 16 Champions League fixtures, including both semi-final legs against Arsenal. His contributions in Europe underline his pedigree at the highest level.
Before his move to the Spanish capital, Ruggeri primarily operated as a left wing-back under Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta. He made 109 first-team appearances for the Serie A side after progressing through the club's academy, showcasing his versatility and attacking instincts from wide areas.

The signing of Ruggeri would bolster Villa's defensive options as they prepare for another campaign in the Premier League and European competition. His experience in the Champions League and familiarity with high-intensity systems make him a valuable addition to Emery's squad.
With Digne's departure imminent, Villa have moved quickly to secure a replacement, ensuring continuity in the left-back position. Ruggeri's arrival is expected to be completed in the coming days, subject to personal terms and a medical.
