Aldi has been named the cheapest supermarket in the UK for May 2026, marking its fifth consecutive month at the top of the rankings. According to the latest analysis by consumer group Which?, the German discounter offers an average basket of 95 popular branded and own-brand groceries for just £168.30.
Lidl and Asda Follow in the Rankings
Lidl secured second place when including Lidl Plus discounts, with an average price of £170.58. Without the loyalty scheme, the same shop cost £170.66. Asda came fourth at £192.58, followed by Tesco with Clubcard (£196.88), Morrisons (£197.50), and Sainsbury’s with Nectar (£198.79).
Waitrose was once again the most expensive supermarket, with the same basket of goods costing £235.49 on average throughout May. That represents a difference of £67.19, or nearly 40 percent more than Aldi.
Which? Changes Its Methodology
Which? announced that it will no longer publish its monthly analysis based on a longer list of groceries, which included more branded products. Instead, the organisation will focus on a separate monthly tracker for branded groceries only, allowing for more detailed price comparisons. This new tracker will not include Aldi and Lidl, as they do not stock the same range of branded goods as non-discounter supermarkets.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented: “Many people are still struggling to keep up with the cost of living. While juggling loyalty apps or chasing short-term promotions can sometimes pay off, shoppers just want reliably low prices with no strings attached. Our research shows that Aldi and Lidl completely dominate when it comes to everyday value, so it’s no surprise that they are thriving as people permanently change how they shop. When choosing the wrong supermarket can mean paying up to 40 percent more for comparable essentials, you can make massive savings just by switching where you do your weekly shop.”
