Supermarket giant Asda has issued a public apology and an urgent product recall for a range of its George at Home cushions, warning customers they could pose a serious fire risk.
Urgent Safety Warning Issued
The retailer, which competes with chains like Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl, and Morrisons, has taken the decision to pull the affected items from its shelves. The move comes after an assessment found the cushions may not meet mandatory fire safety regulations.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) confirmed the hazard. "The product presents a risk of fire because the filling may not be fire-retardant," the safety body stated. "This means that if the seat pad comes into contact with a naked flame, the internal filling will catch fire and continue to flame."
The OPSS confirmed the items do not comply with the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988.
Full Refund Offered to Shoppers
In a statement on its website, Asda said: "We have found that in some cases this product does not comply with the fire & furnishing regulations, as the product filling may not be FR (fire retardant) compliant. We have taken the decision to recall the product."
The company is urging any customer who has purchased the listed George Home cushions to stop using them immediately and return them to their nearest Asda store. A full refund will be given even without a receipt.

- Solid dye cushion natural: Batch codes 242, 243, 244, 246, 24x, 24y, 251, 252, 253, 258.
- Slub pom pom edge cushion natural: Batch codes 244, 245, 24x, 24y, 251, 252, 254.
- Slub dye cushion orange: Batch code 254.
- Solid dye cushion orange: Batch code 254.
- Quilted stripe cushion & Textured diamond cushion: All batch codes.
