The Co-operative Bank, which operates branches in Birmingham, has eliminated foreign transaction fees on debit cards used abroad, effective immediately. The bank confirmed that customers will no longer incur the 2.75% charge on overseas purchases or cash withdrawals.
Immediate removal of 2.75% fee
Kat Robinson, head of family and everyday banking at The Co-operative Bank, stated: “Fees for using your card abroad are often an unwelcome surprise when you return home. By removing foreign transaction fees, we’re making it simpler and more affordable for customers to spend overseas.” The change applies to all debit card transactions made abroad, including purchases, restaurant bills, and cash withdrawals at VISA or PLUS ATMs, banks, or Bureau de Changes displaying the VISA sign.
What the change means for customers
The bank clarified that while the currency conversion charge has been removed, additional charges from retailers or cash machine operators may still apply. These extra fees should be disclosed before the transaction is completed. For credit card users, fees still apply depending on usage.
Advice for travellers
The Co-operative Bank advised customers to check with their network provider to ensure they can receive text messages or calls while abroad, as the bank may need to contact them to verify transactions. The mobile app remains accessible worldwide with an internet connection, though roaming charges may apply.
