Dozens of Former WH Smith Stores Face Closure Under TG Jones

Dozens of former WH Smith stores, now rebranded as TG Jones, could face closure, putting thousands of jobs at risk. The chain was acquired by Modella Capital for £76 million, covering 480 locations, but has struggled under challenging trading conditions.

Immediate Closures and Rent Negotiations

A TG Jones spokesperson stated: "This decision has not been taken lightly. While we continue to believe in the strength of the core business, TG Jones has experienced highly challenging trading conditions over the past year, along with many other brick-and-mortar retailers." The spokesperson cited weak consumer spending, cost-of-living pressures, rising operating costs due to government policy, and geopolitical events as factors contributing to ongoing losses. The forced name change from WH Smith also negatively impacted consumer awareness.

Eight of the chain's remaining 450 stores will close immediately. Additionally, 100 more locations are seeking 100% rent holidays, according to The Telegraph. The Guardian reports that the company is requesting 5% rent reductions on hundreds of stores for a year, with further cuts of 15% to 75% beyond that period. If landlords refuse these terms, the stores may shut down.

Impact on Jobs and Communities

A source commented: "This has been the intention all along. Nobody wants almost 500 sites [in the UK]." The potential closures threaten thousands of jobs and could leave many high streets without a key retailer. The company emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly and reflects the broader struggles of brick-and-mortar retail in the current economic climate.

TG Jones continues to believe in the strength of its core business but acknowledges the need for significant restructuring to ensure long-term viability. The outcome of rent negotiations with landlords will determine the fate of many stores.
