Fig and Fox Announces Major Store Closures by End of March
The much-loved UK homeware and lifestyle chain Fig and Fox has confirmed it will close half of its stores by March 31, 2026, citing rising costs and financial pressures. This decision marks a significant blow to shoppers who have frequented the brand's unique blend of retail and café offerings.
Specific Locations Affected by the Shutdown
Fig and Fox's Basingstoke branch in Hampshire will serve its final customers and permanently shut its doors on March 31. This closure follows the recent shutdown of the brand's Winchester branch in February, highlighting a trend of retrenchment for the business. Owned by Helen and James Mitchell, the chain began in Romsey and will continue to operate its remaining stores in Romsey and Salisbury, ensuring some presence in the region.
Reasons Behind the Store Closures
The couple previously attributed the Winchester closure to escalating operational costs and the impending April budget, which made continued trading unsustainable in that location. Similar financial challenges have now led to the broader reduction in store count, affecting the Basingstoke outlet as well. Fig and Fox is known for selling a curated collection of hand-picked gifts, plants, cards, and homeware, alongside a café that features a variety of local produce, making these closures a loss for communities that valued its distinctive offerings.
Customer Reactions and Reviews
Customers have expressed disappointment over the closures, with many praising the chain's quality and atmosphere. One reviewer of the Basingstoke site commented, "Exceptional cakes (had tried a few now) and all are delightful. Good prices and portion sizes. Very good coffee, much better than the larger chains. This has become one of my favourite places in Basingstoke. Lovely selection of items to buy in store also. Hopefully it is here to stay!" Another shopper who visited the Winchester branch noted, "What a great shop – full of atmosphere with quality food and excellent coffee. A must visit in Winchester." However, some feedback highlighted areas for improvement, such as customer service training for staff, with one reviewer stating, "Well presented store with some cool items, although, I would agree with a previous reviewer in that the girls on the till were flat, I’m not sure that rude would be correct, more nonchalant - with maybe a dash of tension between them. We bought some drinks and a few items, coffee was nice, however I would say, send your weekend team on some customer service training." Another customer humorously added, "P.s. please keep the brownie stock high!" reflecting the fondness many have for the brand's products.
Future Outlook for the Remaining Stores
Despite the closures, Fig and Fox will maintain operations in Romsey and Salisbury, allowing the business to continue serving loyal customers in those areas. The move to consolidate stores may help the chain navigate current economic challenges while preserving its core identity. As the retail landscape evolves, this restructuring could position Fig and Fox for a more sustainable future, albeit with a reduced physical footprint.
