Flood Damage Forces Early Closure of Moss on Birmingham New Street
Flood Damage Closes Moss on New Street Early

Flood damage has forced the early temporary closure of Moss on Birmingham New Street, pushing forward the shop's planned goodbye after 28 years in the same location. The men's tailor, formerly known as Moss Bros, had announced last month that it would close its branch on the corner of Temple Street after the summer. However, a handwritten sign on the door now advises customers of an immediate closure due to flooding at the Temple Buildings.

Customers Redirected to Bullring

Google lists the store as 'temporarily' shut. In its window, Moss advises: "We're moving with many familiar faces. Explore our full collection at Bullring Shopping Centre, Birmingham, B5 4BU." The Bullring branch remains open and is the alternative location for customers. BirminghamLive has attempted to contact Moss regarding the closure but has not yet received a response.

History and Context

The Moss shop sits beside the old T4 tea shop, which closed at the end of 2025 and is currently up for rent. Both units are part of the Grade II-listed Temple Buildings, which also houses other retailers such as Ryman. Last year, the building was sold for £4 million to a private investor.

New Openings and Street Transformation

Despite the closure, New Street has seen recent activity. Last week, Bird and Blend opened a new tea shop in the former Claire's Accessories unit. Additionally, Dave's Hot Chicken has submitted an application to add outdoor seating on the corner of Bennetts Hill. The entire street is undergoing major public realm works, which could lead to more venues with outdoor seating once completed.
