One of Britain's major high street discount chains has announced a complete shutdown of its entire store network for three days over the festive period. Home Bargains, a family-run business with hundreds of outlets across the country, will close its doors to allow staff an extended Christmas break.
Full Festive Closure Dates Confirmed
The retailer confirmed that all of its UK stores will be closed on Christmas Day (Thursday, December 25), Boxing Day (Friday, December 26), and New Year's Day (Thursday, January 1). This move provides employees with a consecutive three-day break during the core holiday period.
In a social media announcement aimed at its customers, the company stated: "CHRISTMAS REMINDER. All of our stores will be closing for Boxing Day & New Years Day." The post extended gratitude to its workforce, adding, "We would like to thank all our colleagues for how hard you have worked this past year, and want you to relax and enjoy the Christmas break with your loved ones."
Early Finish on Christmas Eve
Beyond the full-day closures, Home Bargains is also implementing earlier closing times on Christmas Eve. All shops will shut at 5pm, several hours earlier than typical trading hours, to grant team members additional time with family and friends ahead of Christmas Day.
A spokesperson for Home Bargains explained the decision, emphasising the company's values. "Our colleagues work incredibly hard throughout the year, and we want to recognise that commitment," they said. "As a family-run business, we understand the importance of spending time with family and friends, particularly over the holidays. We’re proud to give our teams additional time off to enjoy the festive season."
Understanding Sunday Trading Rules
The announcement coincides with the standard regulatory framework governing large stores during the holiday period. Under UK law, shops larger than 280 square metres can only trade for six consecutive hours between 10am and 6pm on Sundays. They are also legally mandated to close on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.
Businesses with restricted Sunday hours must clearly display their trading times both inside and outside the premises. Large shops found opening outside of permitted hours can face significant fines.
Home Bargains is not alone in opting for festive closures. Other major high street names, including Poundland, Marks and Spencer (M&S), Next, and several UK supermarket chains, have also confirmed they will shut for periods over Christmas and New Year, prioritising staff welfare during the traditionally busy retail season.
