Aston Villa have reshaped their squad this summer with a focus on young, exciting talent, spending over £200 million on replacements after selling several key players. The most notable departure was Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea for £117 million, a record fee for a British player.
New arrivals and early business
Johan Manzambi was the first signing through the door at Villa Park, brought in as a direct replacement for Rogers. The club also secured Alejandro Garnacho, Nicolas Jackson, Joao Gomes and Zion Suzuki, all of whom have years of development ahead before reaching their prime. Deadline-day arrival Ibrahim Mbaye, signed from Paris Saint-Germain, is still only 18 years old.
Villa explored several attacking options during the summer, including a look at Jarrod Bowen early in the window, but the West Ham forward decided to stay and help the club's promotion bid. Other targets, such as Rafael Leao, were also assessed as Villa sought to add more firepower to their front line before eventually agreeing a deal for Mbaye.
Mbaye's potential and recruitment strategy
Mbaye is arguably Villa's most exciting arrival of the summer, with the teenager possessing immense potential. Villa were delighted to secure his signature given the intense interest in him over the last 12 months.
The signing fits Villa's overarching recruitment plan, which was to bring in younger players who can grow in value under manager Unai Emery. This approach was driven by the fact that Villa's squad last season had the second-oldest average age in the Premier League, behind only Fulham.
Endrick interest and loan decision
Another talented youngster Villa were interested in adding was Real Madrid's Endrick. The Brazilian was open to leaving the Bernabeu on loan, which alerted Villa and AS Roma in particular. However, a meeting with Jose Mourinho helped determine that Endrick would stay at Real Madrid until at least January.
Endrick had an excellent spell at Lyon last season, recording 16 goal contributions in 21 matches across all competitions after making just one La Liga appearance in the first half of the campaign. Villa were attentive to his situation, but already have plenty of youthful quality themselves, including 17-year-old centre-forward Brian Madjo.
Whether Villa could make space for a talent like Endrick in January remains to be seen, but his arrival would have been a real coup. For now, Villa have covered the numbers lost through the departures of several players, and the winter window will determine if they can add another promising star to their ranks.
