Morrisons to Close 100 Stores from Next Month in Major Shake-Up
Morrisons to Close 100 Stores from Next Month

Morrisons is set to close 100 stores from next month, a move described as a devastating blow to shoppers. The closures will primarily affect smaller Morrisons Daily stores located on high streets and in smaller communities.

Reasons for Closures

Morrisons stated that the performance of all company-owned convenience stores is under continuous review. Following a recent review, the company has proposed closing a number of stores over the next few months. The statement highlighted that many of these stores were part of the McColl’s acquisition and have struggled with performance for years, remaining loss-making despite efforts to remedy the situation.

In an announcement last month, Morrisons cited significant cost increases due to government policy choices as a contributing factor to the closures.

Impact on Communities

The closure of Morrisons stores will also lead to the closure of local Post Offices housed within them, causing frustration among residents. Morrisons has said it would welcome applications from nearby retailers interested in hosting a Post Office inside their stores.

Digital Tournament Sweepstake

In other news, Morrisons has launched a digital tournament sweepstake with a million-point jackpot. More Card app users can win free treats and big points as football action kicks off. Ten customers with the winning team will become More Point Millionaires overnight.

Users can reveal their team from 8 June until 24 June. Gareth Lloyd, Head of Loyalty at Morrisons, said: Nothing says a summer of sport like a football sweepstake. This interactive More Card app game allows our customers to enjoy the football with some added rewards, from delicious bakery treats to ice creams and money-off vouchers and millions of More Points. He encouraged everyone to sign up and reveal their team ahead of kick-off.

For customers who do not use the loyalty app, Morrisons will offer match-day deals for all shoppers to celebrate when England and Scotland take to the pitch.
