The specific store is situated on Lisburn Road in Belfast, near an existing Poundland outlet. Poundland's lease with the landlord has expired, creating an opportunity for Marks & Spencer to acquire the space. The discount retailer initiated a clearance sale at this location on February 18, with a permanent closure scheduled for March 22.
A spokesperson for Poundland commented, "We began a clearance sale at the store at 511-513 Lisburn Road, Belfast last week as the store is due to close on March 22. As always when we have to close a store in these circumstances, we'll consult formally with colleagues and that work is under way." The closure is attributed to the lease expiration, not broader restructuring efforts, though Poundland has reduced its store count from 800 to 651 in recent years.
