Muffin Break Closes at Bullring After 11 Years, SushiDog to Open
Muffin Break closes at Bullring, SushiDog moves in

A popular coffee chain has served its final muffin at one of Birmingham's busiest shopping centres, ending an 11-year chapter.

End of an Era for Bullring Cafe

Muffin Break has permanently closed its unit on the upper floor of Birmingham Bullring's West Mall, directly facing the beauty retailer Sephora. The cafe first welcomed shoppers back in 2014, becoming a familiar fixture for those needing a coffee and sweet treat.

The Bullring management has confirmed that this closure is not due to underperformance but is part of a planned transition. The unit is being prepared for an exciting new culinary arrival, marking a significant change in the centre's food offering.

A New Dining Experience Arrives in 2026

From January 2026, the former Muffin Break space will be occupied by SushiDog, bringing a completely different dining concept to the Bullring.

The new establishment will feature a 25-seater kiosk where shoppers can create their own custom sushi plates. The menu will include burrito-style sushi rolls and bowls, catering to both those looking for a quick grab-and-go meal and visitors wanting to dine in.

A Complex History and Fresh Start

Muffin Break's tenure at the Bullring wasn't without its challenges. Earlier this year, Birmingham City Council declared a health emergency after inspectors discovered extensive mouse droppings throughout the unit.

The situation prompted immediate works, and by Thursday, April 10, Birmingham Magistrates' Court confirmed there was no longer an imminent risk to public health. The cafe's final hygiene inspection in July resulted in a 'good' rating of four out of five, showing significant improvement before its closure.

This change represents the evolving nature of retail and dining in Birmingham's city centre, with SushiDog's arrival set to offer shoppers a fresh, contemporary food option in the heart of the Bullring.
