A major new supermarket development is poised to transform a key Birmingham suburb, as the new Lidl store at Kingstanding Circle nears completion.
Construction Progress and Anticipated Opening
The physical structure of the much-anticipated Lidl supermarket is now fully built, with current efforts focused on finishing the surrounding grounds and external works. The store is rising on the site of the former Kingstanding Shopping Centre, which was demolished in June 2024 to make way for the German discount retailer.
While the developers have not yet announced an official completion date, unconfirmed reports suggest the store could be ready to open its doors by February 2026. Oscott ward Councillor Darius Sandhu commented on the progress, stating, "They are looking to complete it early next year. It looks fantastic and it's good to see development at the circle."
Community Hopes for Regeneration
The arrival of Lidl is seen as a catalyst for wider regeneration in the area. The old shopping centre had become a symbol of decline, having been boarded up and covered in graffiti after years of reduced use, despite once being a bustling hub for local residents.
Councillor Sandhu expressed a hope shared by many: "Hopefully it will also bring new business." This sentiment was echoed by local pensioner Derek Knight, 80, of Kings Road, who said last year, "I'm all for a new Lidl and it will be a benefit to the community. It will also encourage people to use the local shops opposite as well."
Boosting Local Retail and Options
The new store will provide another budget-friendly option for shoppers in north Birmingham. Other nearby Lidl branches include those on Old Walsall Road in Hamstead, Kings Road in Sutton Coldfield, and Sutton Road in Erdington.
The development represents a significant investment in Kingstanding, aiming to replace a derelict eyesore with a modern retail facility that supporters believe will serve the community and provide a boost to the local economy.
