Next recalls Cora ceiling light over injury risk

High street retailer Next has issued an urgent recall for a popular ceiling light fitting after safety officials identified a serious risk of injury.

Safety Alert Issued by Government Watchdog

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has forced the recall of the Cora 5LT Flush Ceiling Light. The government body states the product presents a "risk of injuries" because the polished chrome fitting's bubble glass globes may detach while the light is in use and fall.

According to the official recall notice, if a globe falls, it could strike anyone standing beneath it and potentially shatter, leading to injuries. The OPSS confirmed the product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016.

What Customers Need to Do Immediately

The OPSS and Next are urging all customers who have purchased the light to "stop using the product immediately". The affected item, sold under the code M26838, has been available in stores and online since December 2021.

Next has initiated a full recall and is offering customers a complete refund. The retailer stated the fitting does not meet its "strict technical specifications" due to the potential for the glass globe to detach during use.

Customers have several options to return the product:

  • Call Next on 0333 777 8000 (option 1) to arrange a collection.
  • Use the Selfserve line on 0800 587 7758 (option 3).
  • Log into 'My Account' online and select 'Arrange a return'.
  • Return the item directly to any Next store for a full refund.

Next has also asked that anyone who bought the light as a gift should inform the recipient to contact them without delay.

Full Withdrawal and Retailer Apology

The OPSS has confirmed that Next is now recalling the item from all end users. In its statement, Next apologised for any disappointment caused by the safety issue.

This action underscores the importance of product safety regulations and the role of the OPSS in monitoring goods sold to the British public. Consumers are advised to always heed official recall notices to ensure their safety at home.
