River Island to Shut 9 More UK Stores Next Week in Major Restructuring
River Island confirms 9 more store closures next week

High street fashion chain River Island has confirmed it will close nine more of its stores next week, dealing another significant blow to UK retail.

Wave of Closures Continues

The latest round of shutdowns is part of a major restructuring plan previously announced by the retailer. This strategy will see the total number of River Island shops dramatically reduced from 250 to just 122 locations nationwide.

Several stores, including those in Brighton, Edinburgh Princes Street, Stockton-on-Tees, and Great Yarmouth, already closed their doors towards the end of 2025.

Final Week for Nine Branches

The next nine branches are all scheduled to cease trading by January 18. The affected locations include the store in Sutton Coldfield, alongside others across the UK.

The full list of River Island stores closing next week is:

  • Aylesbury
  • Burton upon Trent
  • Leeds Birstall Park
  • Lisburn
  • Perth
  • Surrey Quays
  • Sutton Coldfield
  • Taunton
  • Wrexham

CEO's Statement on Future Viability

Ben Lewis, chief executive of River Island, explained the reasoning behind the difficult decisions. He stated the group has a “clear transformation strategy to ensure the long-term viability of the business”, and that the restructuring provides a strong platform to deliver this plan.

“Recent improvements in our fashion offer and shopping experience are starting to show results,” Lewis added, “and the restructuring plan will enable us to align our store estate to our customers’ needs.”

He also expressed gratitude to suppliers, landlords, and other stakeholders for their constructive engagement and shared confidence in the future of the River Island brand.
