Solihull Mahoney's DIY Closes After 50 Years

A long-standing Midland business has closed after nearly 50 years, with its owners thanking customers for their loyalty through good and bad times. Mahoney's DIY, a building materials supplier on Old Lode Lane in Solihull, has shut its doors.

Business Up for Sale

The builder's yard was put on the market, and Bond Wolfe confirmed that a bid had been received, with offers starting from £1.25 million. Despite the Solihull closure, the family-run business assured customers that its Streetly site will continue to operate.

Heartfelt Thanks to Staff and Customers

Announcing the closure, Mahoney's DIY expressed gratitude to its hard-working staff, describing an environment where youngsters thrived. In a social media post, the company stated: "After almost 50 years, Mahoney's in Solihull has closed its doors. It's been a pleasure serving Solihull and the surrounding areas."

The post continued: "First of all we would like to thank all our hard-working and lovely staff whose loyalty to Mahoney's over the years has been the best. We wish them all the very best in the future - some to a well-deserved retirement and others on to pastures new. Good luck."

The company also remembered those who helped Mahoney's grow from the beginning, when Mick and Julia took over Martin's, and those who saw it expand. "Many left to enjoy long retirements or to follow other paths. Your support meant so much. Others were sadly taken far too soon. You are fondly remembered, rest in peace."

Mahoney's was described as a place where youngsters thrived in part-time and weekend jobs, learning about the world of work while studying at school and university. "All went on to success in various careers. Mahoney's became more than a workplace, it became a family."

The business concluded: "All of this would not have been possible without the support of our wonderful customers. Thank you for staying with us through good times and bad. Recessions, austerity, a cost of living crisis and a pandemic. We will always be grateful for your support. With our best wishes and heartfelt thanks. John, Karen, Dick and the Mahoney family."
