John Horwood, the owner of Kennedy's MICA Hardware on New Road in Rubery, Birmingham, has retired after more than five decades in the trade. His last day was Saturday, June 27, marking the end of an era for the beloved home and garden store.
Five Decades of Service
Horwood first joined the store in 1972, when it was still known as Kennedy's. He took over as owner in 1989 and has since become a familiar face to generations of customers. In a farewell message posted on Facebook, he said: "Officially this is my last day at Kennedy's Mica Hardware after around 50 years and many many customers who have become friends. I would like to thank everyone for your support and friendship. There have been several false starts it is finally happening. I will be helping out over the next few weeks until the new owners are settled in."
Community Tributes
The announcement sparked an outpouring of goodwill from customers and former employees. One customer wrote: "The end of an era. Enjoy your retirement John (or Mr Kennedy)." Another said: "You've earned it! Wishing you all the best in your next chapter." A third added: "Wishing you all the best in your retirement John!! You truly do deserve it."
An ex-worker commented: "Happy retirement John, well deserved. I can still smell the paraffin and the typical hardware shop smell. You all set me on the path for hard work all these years. It's been a pleasure. Time to hang up your brown coat and blank keys and get your shorts and sandals on to relax."
A Local Institution
Kennedy's MICA Hardware has been a fixture on New Road, offering everything from tools to garden supplies. Horwood's retirement marks the end of a personal journey that began when he was a young employee and culminated in decades of independent shopkeeping. The new owners are expected to take over shortly, with Horwood remaining on hand to assist during the transition.
