The Gunmakers Arms, a historic pub in Birmingham city centre, has permanently closed its doors just six months after reopening following a rock 'n' roll-themed refurbishment featuring Ozzy Osbourne artwork. Mason Newman, who took over the 200-year-old Bath Street establishment in December 2024, confirmed the closure to BirminghamLive, stating the pub will not reopen.
Mental Health and Financial Pressures
Newman, an artist who has worked with Madonna, revealed that his decision to close was influenced by rising operating costs and his own mental health struggles. He said: 'Over the past year, I have put everything I had into trying to make The Gunmakers Arms a success. It has been one of the most challenging and emotional periods of my life.'
He added that he took on the pub during a severe bipolar episode, which affected his clarity and judgment. 'While I take full responsibility for the decisions I made, my mental health was a significant factor in taking on a project of this scale,' he said.
Challenges Facing Hospitality
Newman highlighted the tough reality for independent venues, citing rising operating costs, increased employer costs, higher taxes, and ongoing economic pressures. 'The Gunmakers has not been immune to the current climate and challenges facing pubs across the country,' he noted.
He expressed gratitude to staff and customers who supported the pub, saying: 'It is heartbreaking for me, for the staff, and for the customers who supported us throughout this journey.'
Looking Ahead
Newman said he is now focusing on his health and wellbeing, and will continue his work as an artist. 'I am proud of what we tried to build, even if circumstances ultimately meant it could not continue,' he concluded.
