Stourbridge Father Leaves Hospitality Career to Launch Kitchen Business for Family Time
Andy Billage, a father-of-two from Stourbridge, has made a significant career shift by quitting his demanding hospitality management job to start his own kitchen makeover business. This move was driven by his desire to spend more quality time with his young family and avoid missing out on his children's formative years.
From Hotel Management to Kitchen Makeovers
After 17 years in the hospitality industry, Andy described his previous role at an airport hotel as a '365-day-a-year job' where the phone would 'never stop ringing'. He often worked long hours, leaving home before his children woke up and returning after they had gone to bed, which left him with little opportunity to engage in family life.
In January, Andy launched Kitchen Makeovers with the support of his wife, Becky. The business focuses on providing a cost-effective alternative to full kitchen renovations by replacing doors, worktops, and fittings. Andy noted that in the current economic climate, many customers are seeking affordable solutions for home improvements.
Prioritizing Family and Flexibility
Andy emphasized that his decision was motivated by not wanting to miss his children growing up. He explained, 'I've got two young children and I didn't want to miss them growing up.' Since starting the new venture, he has enjoyed greater flexibility, such as taking his children to the zoo during half term—an activity that was impossible in his previous job.
While Andy acknowledges that he still works hard, he now experiences a better work-life balance. He stated, 'That balance was something I just couldn't get before.' The business has quickly gained momentum, attracting a steady stream of customers and allowing Andy to blend professional success with personal fulfillment.
