Rich Cross, a 28-year-old from Bristol known as the 'Service Station King', has visited all 97 official UK service stations in his two-door Smart Car over the past 13 to 14 years. His passion began during school holidays with his father, sparking a fascination that led him to explore every site. Now, he reveals the biggest red flags and standout stations.
Key Warning Signs
Speaking to SMC Coach Hire, Rich highlighted several red flags. He dislikes sites that are too busy, as poor customer service and long waits deter repeat visits. Messy toilets are a major warning sign, and the condition of the road through the site is critical, especially for lorry drivers who are the most regular customers. Potholes are a significant problem.
Standout Service Stations
Rich maintains a list of memorable stations. Lancaster Services on the M6 features the iconic Pennine Tower, which once housed a restaurant with views of Lancashire, now closed. Charnock Richard (M6), Keele (M6), and Leicester Forest East (M1) have bridges where customers can sit above the motorway while eating. Newer sites like Leeds Skelton Lake and Rotherham incorporate green spaces, with one offering a 2km walk behind a country park.
The Ideal Service Station
According to Rich, the perfect service station offers a variety of brands to cater to different customers. Clean toilet and shower facilities are essential, along with plenty of EV chargers as the country moves toward electric vehicles. Ease of access is also crucial: online sites directly on the motorway via a sliproad are preferred over offroad sites that require extra driving.
Top-Rated Stations Under Scrutiny
Gloucester, Tebay, and Cairn Lodge, all run by the same company, feature a farm shop style with locally sourced, freshly made produce and extensive green landscaping. Rugby, opened in 2021, is well-landscaped with ample EV charging and a variety of brands. Beaconsfield, home to the UK's only Wetherspoons, offers about 15 brands and significant EV charging investment, making it a popular stop on the M40 near London.
