Birmingham's Sock Choc Appeal: A Simple Act of Kindness for the Homeless
Birmingham's Sock Choc Appeal for Homeless This Christmas

A heartwarming campaign encouraging simple donations of socks and chocolate to support people experiencing homelessness has been relaunched in Birmingham for the Christmas period.

The Woman Behind the BeKind Movement

Yasmin Paulson, a Shirley resident and founder of the BeKind foodbank network, is spearheading the initiative. Her dedication to helping others stems from a personal health challenge, having suffered a stroke two decades ago. Last year, her remarkable community work was recognised with an invitation to a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace with Queen Camilla, an experience she described as 'a once in a lifetime' honour.

What is the Sock Choc Appeal?

The campaign, named Sock Choc, is beautifully straightforward. It asks members of the public to donate a pair of socks and a bar of chocolate, which will be distributed to members of Birmingham's homeless community. Yasmin emphasises that the items do not need to be expensive, but this small act of kindness can make a significant difference.

"It's a small act of kindness, but it's a big thing," Yasmin told BirminghamLive. "BeKind isn't just me, I have an amazing team of volunteers and the best people."

The appeal is a revival of an initiative originally created by former Birmingham police officer Ian Northcott, who was reportedly 'chuffed' to learn Yasmin would continue his legacy.

A Year-Round Problem Needs Constant Support

While the campaign is timed for Christmas, Yasmin is keen to highlight that homelessness and poverty are persistent issues. "People are poor and homeless all year round," she stated. "Poverty doesn't clock off at 5pm, or after the Christmas period, it's a constant issue and always there."

The Sock Choc appeal is running in collaboration with the Birmingham Christmas Shelter, which from December 24 to 28 will provide three hot meals daily, sleeping accommodation, and shower facilities for anyone without a home.

Yasmin's charity has already contributed substantially, donating bags full of Vans trainers to those in need.
