Schoolboy's Incredible Fundraising Effort After Two Lifesaving Interventions

A courageous 10-year-old boy from Dolgellau has completed an extraordinary 106-mile fundraising challenge for the Wales Air Ambulance service that came to his rescue on two separate occasions throughout his childhood.

Aron Lloyd, a pupil at Ysgol Bro Idris, originally aimed to cover 102 miles - the equivalent distance from his home to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital and back - through walking, cycling and running. The determined youngster ultimately surpassed his target, clocking up an impressive 106 miles despite still recovering from a serious leg injury.

A History of Lifesaving Care

The Wales Air Ambulance first assisted Aron when he was just two years old after he suffered a febrile seizure. His mother Rhian recalled that "all was good" following this incident and that he eventually grew out of the seizures.

Tragedy struck again in January this year when the all-Wales charity was called out to Aron for a second time. While sledging with his brother and friends, Aron hit a rock and broke his femur in a serious accident.

The Wales Air Ambulance medics arrived in one of the charity's rapid response vehicles to assist ambulance crews at the scene. Aron was transported to hospital by road and required an operation the following day to have a plate and pins fitted in his leg.

Overcoming Adversity to Help Others

Despite being unable to participate in sports since his accident, Aron decided to take on this remarkable charity fundraising challenge for the service that had helped him twice. He completed his final miles by walking up Cader Idris, a significant achievement for anyone, let alone a child recovering from such a serious injury.

Rhian expressed her family's pride in Aron's accomplishment, noting that his friends had been incredibly supportive throughout his challenge. The young fundraiser managed to raise £1,100 in total for the lifesaving charity.

Following his 106-mile challenge, a delighted Aron visited the Caernarfon airbase with his parents and brother. There he met Elaine Orr, the charity's regional fundraising manager, and the crew that had treated him.

The Vital Service Behind the Story

The Wales Air Ambulance operates as a consultant-led service, bringing hospital-standard treatments directly to patients. When necessary, they can transfer patients directly to the most appropriate hospital for their specific illness or injury.

This advanced critical care includes the ability to:

  • Administer anaesthesia at the scene
  • Deliver blood transfusions
  • Conduct minor operations

As a pan-Wales service, the dedicated crews will travel throughout the country to deliver lifesaving care, remaining on standby 24/7 for those suffering life or limb-threatening injuries or illnesses.

Looking to the Future

Aron continues to undergo hospital treatment as part of his recovery journey. He is currently waiting for a further operation to remove the plate from his leg and is looking forward to returning to playing football once he has fully recovered.

Elaine Orr from the charity praised Aron's efforts, stating: "It's remarkable that Aron has needed our service not once but twice and lovely that he wanted to fundraise for us. Aron has raised an incredible amount of money for the Wales Air Ambulance, and he should be immensely proud of himself."

The charity must raise £13 million every year to maintain its helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road. Fundraisers like Aron's directly contribute to keeping this essential service operational for the people of Wales.
