A Birmingham butcher has branded a thief the 'scum of the earth' after stealing up to £200 from a charity box. The incident occurred at Johnstans Butchers on Kings Heath High Street on Wednesday, May 6, at around 12:50 PM.
Details of the Theft
A man entered the shop and acted suspiciously, according to owner Stephen Hems. The suspect kept touching the charity box and, when Hems turned his back for a moment, placed it under his arm and left. The box contained nearly six months of donations intended for Birmingham Children's Hospital.
Owner's Reaction
Stephen Hems expressed outrage, stating: 'You have to be a lowlife to steal from any form of charity box. You're scum of the earth, let's be truthful.' He added that the box likely held around £200, including significant contributions from the Christmas period. Hems regularly collects donations and sends them to the hospital when in the city centre.
Suspect Description
The thief is described as white, of medium height, middle-aged, and allegedly spoke with an Irish or traveller accent. CCTV footage captured the incident, and Hems hopes the public can help identify the man to prevent further thefts.
Police Appeal
A West Midlands Police spokesperson confirmed the theft was reported on May 8. Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101 or via Live Chat, quoting log 2415. The police are investigating and seeking to apprehend the suspect.
This incident has shocked the local community, with many expressing support for the butcher and the charity. Donations to Birmingham Children's Hospital are vital for supporting young patients and their families.
