Newport Community Unites for Heartfelt Charity Marathon Event
This Saturday offers a perfect opportunity for families seeking an uplifting and meaningful day out in Newport. A dedicated group of friends is hosting a special charity event packed with activities, fundraising, and community spirit, all to honor the memory of a beloved friend.
Remembering Laura Goodson
Last year, the Newport community was deeply saddened by the loss of 37-year-old Laura Goodson to cancer. She is survived by her three-year-old daughter Theia, her mother Helen, her sister Beth, her husband Craig, and a wide circle of friends who cherished her. In the wake of her passing, Laura's close friend Dan Brittain received acceptance into the London Marathon, prompting him to run in support of St David's Hospice. This decision was made to thank the hospice for the compassionate end-of-life care they provided to Laura.
Dan's Determination and Injury
Dan quickly demonstrated his commitment by raising an impressive £2,000 himself. However, he recently suffered a setback with a fractured vertebra. Despite this injury, his primary concern remains not his own recovery, but his ability to complete the marathon and continue raising crucial funds for the hospice.
Friends Rally Together
Inspired by Dan's unwavering determination, Laura's friends—including his wife Laura Brittain, along with Jenna McDonnell, Stacey Taylor, and Nadia Williams—have come together to support his efforts. Their collective goal is to help Dan reach his £6,000 target by organizing a series of charity "marathon" events.
Family Fun Day Details
This Saturday, Jenna, Stacey, and Nadia will host a family fun day at Jenna McDonnell's salon in Newport. The event will feature a variety of mini-marathons, including:
- Beauty sales
- Nail marathons
- Fascinator sales
- Jenna's renowned annual hair marathon
Jenna, who holds a Guinness World Record as the fastest hairstylist, uses her record-breaking speed and skills annually to raise money for charitable causes. This year's hair marathon holds particular significance as it is dedicated to Laura's memory and aims to support the charity that assisted her and her family.
Community Support and Sentiments
Laura Brittain, Dan's wife, expressed her pride in the community's efforts, stating: "I am incredibly proud of Dan and of all the friends and members of the community who have come together to support this cause. We truly feel that Laura is looking down on us all, and that's what keeps us going."

The charity marathon day will take place from 5am to 5pm on Saturday, March 14, at Jenna McDonnell's Salon, located at 440 Chepstow Road, Newport. Members of the public are warmly invited to attend, show their support, and contribute to raising funds for St David's Hospice.
