An urgent Christmas fundraising campaign has been launched in Newport, with the goal of bringing festive joy and essential support to 300 of the city's most vulnerable children and young people.
How the Christmas Cwtch Appeal Works
The appeal is a partnership between Newport Live and Newport City Council, now running for several consecutive years. Donations are being collected through a dedicated GoFundMe page on Newport Live's website. Every penny raised will be spent directly on those in greatest need.
The funds will purchase essential items, gifts, and presents, which will be wrapped and delivered in the week before Christmas Day. Some of the money will also fund a Christmas party at the Celtic Manor in December, where younger children can meet Father Christmas. The event offers a moment of shared celebration for carers, disabled children, foster families, and those cared for by the local authority.
Building on Community Generosity
The initiative relies entirely on the generosity of local residents, businesses, and partner organisations. Last year's appeal raised over £6,000, and organisers hope to match or even exceed that total this festive season.
Councillor Laura Lacey, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for Social Services, expressed her gratitude: "We’re really grateful to Newport Live for continuing to partner with us. Each year, this appeal makes a real difference, helping vulnerable children and their families access essential items and extra support during what can be a very difficult time."
She praised the inspiring generosity of the local community, whose contributions spread "much-needed kindness across Newport."
A Personal Touch to Festive Giving
Karl Reed, head of community sport and wellbeing at Newport Live, highlighted the direct impact of donations. "I’ve seen first-hand the beaming smiles on the children’s faces at the Christmas party," he said. "It’s a simple way for us to connect local people and businesses with a worthwhile cause."
He described the scene of children leaving the Celtic Manor venue, "arms filled with Christmas goodies, presents and selection boxes," as a powerful example of the city coming together to help those less fortunate.
Financial donations of any size are welcomed and can be made via the official GoFundMe page at www.newportlive.co.uk/cwtch2025. Those wishing to donate via alternative methods such as BACS, or businesses seeking to discuss fundraising ideas, are encouraged to contact Karl Reed directly at karl.reed@newportlive.co.uk.
