Church Leader Embarks on London Marathon Journey to Support Local Foodbank and Youth Programs
Katy Shubotham, a dedicated leader at Nunhead Salvation Army in London, is preparing to take on the London Marathon for the first time. Her mission is to raise crucial funds for the church's foodbank, which provides essential support to individuals grappling with the cost of living, as well as to enhance activities for children and young people in the community.
From Health Crisis to Marathon Challenge
Katy's running journey began just a few years ago, sparked by a serious health scare. After the birth of her son three years ago, she developed acute pancreatitis, leading to multiple hospital stays over four months. Reflecting on this difficult period, Katy shared, "There were times when I was so ill that I lost awareness of my surroundings. It was a life-threatening situation that served as a wake-up call. I knew I had to get healthy and fit for my children, so I started making significant changes in my life."
She began with the Couch to 5k program and has since progressed to marathon training. Katy explained her motivation: "I run to prove to myself that my body isn't broken and to take a break from the world. I run to make my children proud and to show others that if I can do it, anyone can." Today, she feels stronger than ever, describing herself as "in the best shape of my life—physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually."
Addressing Rising Food Insecurity in Nunhead
The foodbank at Nunhead Salvation Army is the only one in the area, operating every second Wednesday from 11 am to 1 pm. It provides essential items such as pasta, cereal, tinned meat and fish, tea, coffee, and pet food. Since Christmas, the church has observed a significant increase in demand, currently supporting approximately 35 people with food bags and noting a rise in emergency food requests.
Katy emphasized the compassionate approach of the foodbank: "We don't just hand out food bags and send people on their way. We never want anyone to feel like just a number. We encourage everyone to sit down, have a hot drink, and chat with us to see how we can offer further support. Free porridge or pasta pots are available to all visitors."
Fundraising Goals and Community Impact
Katy's marathon fundraising aims to expand the support services at the foodbank. She stated, "Every penny raised will make a difference. We already collaborate with local organisations, such as one offering free health checks, and I'm eager to build on these initiatives." Additionally, funds will benefit children and young people attending the church, with Katy noting, "The young people will have the opportunity to choose how the money is spent, allowing them to shape their own activities and gain opportunities they might not otherwise have."
The community has rallied behind Katy's efforts, with events like an afternoon tea, a 'guess the number of sweets in a jar' contest, and a bake sale organised by church children. Katy has also made personal sacrifices, giving up her weekly coffee and cake during training.
A Welcoming Hub for the Community
Nunhead Salvation Army also features a bright and welcoming charity shop and café, serving as a safe and inclusive space for residents. Free activities for families are offered during school holidays, further strengthening community bonds.
