Chelmsford Cousins to Run London Marathon in Memory of Brother Andrew
Michael Woolley from Chelmsford and his cousin, Kristina Read, are eagerly anticipating their participation in the London Marathon this Sunday. While both have previous marathon experience, this event holds profound significance as they fundraise for the British Liver Trust, a charity deeply connected to their family's journey.
A Tribute to Andrew's Resilience
Kristina Read, a 47-year-old personal trainer from Basildon, shared the emotional backdrop. "It has been just over a year since we lost Andrew, Michael's brother and my cousin, shortly before his 45th birthday," she explained. Andrew was born with Alagille syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that necessitated a liver transplant at the tender age of eight. He remarkably became one of the longest-surviving liver transplant patients, a source of immense family pride.
Michael Woolley, 42, is tackling the London Marathon for the first time, dedicating every step to his late brother. "Life was never straightforward for Andrew, and he faced more challenges than most, but he handled them with quiet resilience," Kristina reflected. "His strength in adversity is something we will always admire. Running 26.2 miles feels minor compared to his struggles, but it is our way of creating a positive legacy in his memory."
Fundraising for a Vital Cause
By supporting the British Liver Trust, Michael and Kristina aim to assist other families affected by liver disease and fund crucial research. "We know this is what Andrew would have wanted," Kristina emphasized. Michael added, "I am excited to experience the renowned marathon atmosphere, and doing this for my brother will be emotional, but I feel his presence with me. Having our family and friends there will make it a truly special day."
Support from the British Liver Trust
Dan Painter, public fundraising manager at the British Liver Trust, expressed gratitude for their efforts. "As a charity, we lead the fight against liver disease and liver cancer, reaching over two million people annually with information, support, and health advice," he stated. "There is still much work to be done, and we are delighted that Michael and Kristina are running in Andrew's memory. It is a wonderful tribute, and we will be there to cheer them on!"
The British Liver Trust provides essential resources to improve liver health nationwide, making this fundraiser a critical contribution to their ongoing mission.
