A local cyclist is preparing for an incredible journey from Rotherham to the heart of London to support survivors of domestic abuse. Judith Broug aims to complete the 185-mile trip in a single day to raise vital funds for the Rotherham charity Hopian.
The Challenge
The challenge is set for June 21, 2026, which is the longest day of the year. This ambitious ride coincides with Hopian marking its 50th anniversary of providing specialist support to the community. Judith plans to make the most of the summer sun to help her reach the finish line.
Judith said: "I’m certainly going to need it! I’ve done long rides before, but never this long. I really want to support and highlight Hopian’s 50th anniversary because it’s an incredible achievement. I’ve worked with many charities over the years, and fundraising is really difficult for Hopian because most people struggle to think about domestic abuse and child sexual exploitation. There is still a lot of stigma around it."
About Hopian
The charity provides a safe space and trauma-informed care for adults and children who have been affected by abuse.
Sue Wynne, CEO of Hopian, said: "Judith’s challenge helps keep attention on domestic abuse and child sexual exploitation, issues that are often out of sight. The distance she is riding reflects the effort involved in keeping specialist services running when funding is tight and the need keeps growing. Support like this helps us continue being there for people when they reach out."
Finish Line and Tribute
Judith has chosen to finish her ride at the statue of Millicent Fawcett in Parliament Square. She believes the location serves as a powerful tribute to those who fought for the rights of women.
Judith said: "Finishing at the statue of Millicent Fawcett in Parliament Square is a deliberate reminder of the women who came before us and created change. Fawcett was a pioneering suffragist who played a key role in securing women the right to vote, progress we still need to protect today."
Fundraising and Support
Judith’s challenge has already raised more than £700, and she is encouraging others to support the ride and help spread the word. Donations can be made via her JustGiving page.
Hopian remains dedicated to helping everyone, regardless of their background or identity. You can find out more about their work or make a donation through their website.
