Father Prepares for London Marathon in Tribute to Baby Daughter

A devoted dad from Bishop's Stortford is gearing up to tackle the London Marathon, dedicating his run to the memory of his infant daughter and aiming to generate crucial funds for The Sick Children's Trust. This heartfelt effort follows the invaluable assistance his family received when his newborn twins required intensive care shortly after birth.

Family's Journey Through Neonatal Intensive Care

Tom Dollimore, aged 33, resided at Chestnut House in Cambridge, one of the charity's 'Homes from Home', while his twins, Freddie and Amelia, were treated at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at The Rosie Hospital in early 2025. During this period, Tom's partner, Lucy, was recuperating from an emergency caesarean section, scattering the family across different hospital wards amidst a time of profound uncertainty and distress.

Chestnut House, situated directly below the NICU, offered Tom a convenient place to stay nearby, enabling him to swiftly move between Lucy and both children. Tom reflected, "Everything unfolded rapidly. Initially, we were told it might happen tomorrow, then it shifted to today, and suddenly it was immediate. After the twins arrived, Lucy was on one ward, Amelia in intensive care, and Freddie in another area. I was attempting to be in three places simultaneously. Having Chestnut House right beneath the unit provided us with a central base."

"It allowed me to be with each of them when needed, without the burden of commuting from Bishop's Stortford. This lifted a significant weight from our shoulders," he added.

Tragic Loss and the Power of Proximity

Sadly, after eight days, Amelia passed away due to a fetal maternal haemorrhage that occurred just before her birth. Tom emphasized that having accommodation close to the hospital was instrumental in keeping the family united and maximizing their time with their daughter.

"Those days were indescribably hard, but staying at Chestnut House meant we could remain near Amelia and support each other as a family," Tom shared. "It eliminated practical concerns like travel, lodging, and meals, letting us concentrate on being with her. That period was invaluable to us."

Tom also highlighted the solace found in connecting with other families facing similar challenges: "Suddenly, you're in a scenario where friends and family haven't experienced anything comparable, but at Chestnut House, everyone comprehends. Each person there is enduring their own immense struggle, fostering a silent mutual understanding. That solidarity, simply knowing you're not isolated, truly aids in coping."

Freddie's Recovery and Ongoing Inspiration

Freddie, who also needed specialized care post-birth, has since made a robust recovery and is now a lively, cheerful toddler. Tom noted, "Freddie is thriving currently. He's bursting with energy, dashing about and excelling. In those initial days, everything seemed hazy. Yet, his presence compelled us to persevere, even amid our grief. He infused our lives with brightness during an extraordinarily tough phase, and we're profoundly thankful for that."

Marathon as a Memorial and Fundraising Endeavor

Motivated by their ordeal, Tom is now in training for the London Marathon to honor Amelia and reciprocate the charity's support during one of their most trying times.

"It will be an emotional journey from beginning to end. Even in training, moments arise that evoke memories," Tom expressed. "On race day, I'll be thinking of Amelia throughout. This is my method of commemorating her and creating something positive in her name. Our experience will always be part of us, but The Sick Children's Trust rendered an unbearable situation slightly more manageable. I'm uncertain how we would have managed without it."

Charity's Role and Gratitude

Chestnut House is one of two 'Homes from Home' operated by The Sick Children's Trust in Cambridge, alongside Acorn House, which assists families with seriously ill children at Addenbrooke's Hospital's paediatric intensive care unit.

Hayley Peck, house manager of Chestnut House, stated, "We feel deeply honored to have aided Tom and his family during such a difficult period, and we extend our best wishes as he undertakes the London Marathon in Amelia's memory. Families come to Chestnut House at highly emotional junctures in their lives, and our mission is to offer a secure, hospitable environment where they can stay close to their child and find respite. It costs The Sick Children's Trust £40 per night to support a family in our 'Homes from Home', so we are exceedingly grateful for Tom's remarkable fundraising efforts. Thank you."
