A dedicated group of seven female carers from Springfield Healthcare in Darlington have gone the extra mile by completing a 100K walking challenge each to raise vital funds for baby loss charity, SANDS.
The team, known as the G&T’s Crew, collectively clocked up an impressive 700 kilometres (435 miles) through a combination of outdoor walks, treadmill sessions, and walking pad workouts. Fitting the challenge around their busy schedules, the ladies walked before and after their shifts alongside friends and family. Their efforts have so far raised more than £1,100 in support of the charity.
The challenge holds deep personal significance for several members of the team, who have themselves sought support from SANDS over the years. Their determination to give back and raise awareness has been a driving force behind their success. SANDS ensures that everyone affected by the loss of a baby receives the support they need during the toughest of times. The charity campaigns for change, provides training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and supports vital research to help reduce the number of baby deaths and prevent more families from experiencing such devastating loss.
Donna Kelly, registered manager at Springfield Healthcare Darlington, said: “I am incredibly proud of the team for their commitment and dedication to such an important cause. This challenge has meant so much to many of us on a personal level, and to see everyone come together to support each other and raise awareness has been truly inspiring. Every step taken was for families who have experienced unimaginable loss, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved together.”
In addition to the team’s fundraising efforts, their employer, Springfield Healthcare Darlington, also showed its support by donating £100 to the cause.
One of the walkers, Maria Fryer, operations team leader at Springfield Healthcare Darlington, said: “Taking part in this challenge has been really meaningful. Baby loss affects so many people, including many I know personally, and it’s so important that we continue to raise awareness and highlight the support that is available. SANDS does incredible work for families during the most difficult times, and we wanted to do something that could make even a small difference.”
