Just weeks after losing her beloved mother to a terminal illness, a devoted daughter from Staffordshire completed a gruelling 100-kilometer endurance trek across a national park. Gemma Simpson, 41, took on the demanding weekend walking event alongside three close friends to raise vital funds for charity in memory of Lynne Davies.
Lynne passed away on June 18 following a three-year battle with motor neurone disease (MND), a progressive condition affecting the brain and nerves. The fundraiser has already collected nearly £5,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, an organisation that supplied vital communication equipment and specialist furniture to support the family during Lynne's illness.
Peak District Route Held Deep Personal Significance
The Peak District route held a deeply personal significance for the walking team as the national park was the favourite location of the former nurse, who had requested her ashes be scattered there. The group completed the full distance wearing custom fundraising shirts featuring a photograph of the proud grandmother, who had helped her daughter choose their team name: Lynne's Leggy Ladies.
Gemma said: "Watching my mum battle MND was the hardest thing I've ever experienced. Through it all, she never lost her smile, her strength, or the unconditional love she had for her children. She showed me what real courage looks like. Completing the 100km Peak Ultra Challenge wasn't just about finishing a walk. It was my way of honouring her, remembering everything she went through, and saying thank you for everything she gave me."
Emotional Achievement Made Even More Poignant
The emotional achievement was made even more poignant for the local family as the funeral took place just two days after the team crossed the finish line. Around 3,000 participants took part in the broader event across the region to raise money for various UK charities.
Gemma added: "Whenever I wanted to stop, I thought about her and kept going. This challenge was for you, Mum. I hope I made you proud. Your strength will always inspire me, and your love will stay with me every step of the way."
