Families in Essex are being urged to host a Big Green Picnic this summer to support families living with dementia. Dementia Adventure, a national charity based in Chelmsford, launched the campaign last year, encouraging those whose lives have been impacted by dementia to enjoy the outdoors with their friends and families. The charity promotes the benefits of nature and being outdoors and believes that, with the right support, people with dementia can experience joy, adventure and meaningful connections.
Big Green Picnic Events Across Essex
This July, it is hoped that Big Green Picnics will be held up and down the county to promote the importance of being in nature, and help people feel connected, supported and less isolated. Families are encouraged to host a Big Green Picnic to:
- Create an event for friends, family, the community and beneficiaries
- Celebrate the outdoors in a peaceful, welcoming way
- Raise funds for Dementia Adventure
- Help reduce the stigma around dementia and build inclusive communities
Charity Leader Encourages Participation
Rosie Wren, head of fundraising and engagement, said: "The Big Green Picnic is an opportunity to create a joyful and intergenerational, shared outdoor experience, while making meaningful differences to the lives of people living with dementia."
"Whether in a care home, park, community outdoor area or your garden, the Big Green Picnic is about coming together to enjoy nature in a welcoming, peaceful and meaningful way."
Resources and Support Available

Dementia Adventure hosts a calendar of supported short breaks each year, along with Green Letter Days - free days out. Both initiatives are designed for people living with dementia and their carers. They also offer free online dementia support sessions for carers, families and professionals.
